Patronage of the First Vice-President of the European Parliament Sabine Verheyen

EACD

“Together, let’s celebrate the power of cinema to inspire and bring us closer as a diverse, democratic society”. Those are the words of the patron of this years’ edition of the European Arthouse Cinema Day, the First Vice-President of the European Parliament Sabine Verheyen in her video message inviting cinemas to join the day and highlighting the values of the event.

Presentation

As the chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) between 2014-2019 and currently in charge of the Lux-The European Audience Film Award, Sabine Verheyen has been a key advocate for promoting cultural diversity, supporting the creative industries, and enhancing access to education and digital skills across Europe. Her patronage is the occasion for a call to participate in this Global Day of Action for Democracy, Diversity, and European (Film-)Culture.

The European Arthouse Cinema Day

The European Arthouse Cinema Day has brought over its eight editions more than 400 000 spectators to more than 700 cinemas in 42 countries all over the world. The day is filled with screenings, special events and many ways to celebrate European and Arthouse cinema(s). Don't forget to register at https://artcinemaday.org/en/re... to join the movement.

Her Statement

It is great honour for me to be the patron of the ninth European Cinema Day, which will be celebrated on 17 November 2024. This year's theme 'Democracy and Diversity' is of particular importance as it reflects the important role that cinema plays in promoting tolerance, supporting open dialogue and fostering intercultural exchange. Film and cinema are not just entertainment, but reflect our society and culture, shaping and influencing how we see others and ourselves. It helps us to preserve our cultural heritage while promoting innovation and social progress. I look forward to the many powerful stories that will be told on this day and I encourage everyone to join us in celebrating cinema's unique ability to bring people together.
